[This Year’s] New Year’s Eve Ball weighs exactly 11,875 pounds. That’s the heft of 2,688 crystal triangles bolted onto the geodesic sphere, shining with the intensity of 672 LED modules (each module has 48 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs, for a total of 32,256 individual LEDs) reflecting off a sturdy aluminum frame.
Another thing you might not notice are the colors the Ball is capable of emitting. The average tourist won’t notice much of a difference when the Ball changes colors, but it can produce over 16 million colors with billions of unique patterns

[Read More]Madonna’s 12th studio album will be released in the spring of 2012, with its first single due out in February or March.
The diva announced the news herself in an interview with Sweden’s Sveriges Television (SVT) in Venice, Italy. Madonna is there to promote her film “W.E.,” which premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday, Sept. 1.
Madonna says that she’s “started a little bit of work in the studio” for the forthcoming album and will continue recording in “New York, until the end of the year” when she returns to the United States. The entertainer began working on the album officially on July 4, as confirmed by her manager Guy Oseary, via a tweet. That day marked her “1st day in the recording studio for the new album.”

“Stand-up comics may have the right to ‘work out’ their material in its ugliest and rawest form in front of an audience, but the violent imagery of Tracy’s rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT Community. It also doesn’t line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person. I hope for his sake that Tracy’s apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian coworkers at 30 Rock, without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket.”
I can see where people want to write Britney off— there are definitely times when she doesn’t give a fuck, when her interviews are bland and her videos lackluster, but I think there are two Britneys. There is Britney Spears the girl from the south that smacks her bubblegum and talks with a twang, and there’s Britney Spears the pop icon. And I think she likes being both, but she wants to keep them separate. I think she truly likes making music, shooting videos, going on tour and rehearsing new material. But I also think that she has the mentality that it’s a job— when the work is done, she wants to go back to wearing no make up and eating ice cream without reservation. And she’s allowed to do that.
She’s careful. As she should be— I don’t know how I would handle going on television shows, talking to people that chronicled my life at it’s lowest point. I wouldn’t be surprised if she feels paranoid, fearful. I bet she’s embarrassed. Because even if people have looked past what happened in 2007/2008, it doesn’t mean that they didn’t point and laugh when it happened. She’s smart in not walking the red carpet, where she would be asked questions about her head shaving and umbrella incidents— you know people would jump on any chance to talk to her without censor. I think she knows how this all works— she was raised as a pop star. She doesn’t know any other way of life.
What I’m trying to say is this:
Keep this in mind: It was Spears that thought up that school girl outfit, that created a monster in pink pig tails and knee highs. Spears pushed for the release of “Toxic” as a single— earning her her first and only Grammy award. She cowrote the track “Freakshow” on her critically acclaimed album Blackout, easily one of the most important tracks of the past five years.
Britney Spears is a lot smarter than people think. She’s painfully aware of who she is, and just as importantly— who she isn’t. She knows the scene better than most because she helped to create it.

Well we had a listen to ‘Femme Fatale’ earlier. And here’s the good news: ‘Circus’ feels like the work of a different artist. Here’s the even better news: ‘Femme Fatale’ is another ‘Blackout’. It’s bursting with all that album’s best bits - the slightly deranged production, the hard and dark spirit, the massive beats and the big tunes. And while it might be less of a surprise, as Britney is obviously pretty much back on top of things now, on first listen it might just be as much of a masterpiece. It’s also a relief, because if ‘Femme Fatale’ had been a bit of a dog’s dinner Britney-as-a-recording-artist would have been over.

I know this seems random, but with all the talk of product placement in music videos (Hold It Against Me) I remembered this article about the varied reasons for such placements. Sometimes there are very good reasons, some artistic, and sometimes it’s really the record labels decision.
The sounds of ridicule equate to the sound of a cash register for Justin’s camp. Those schoolyard jabs about him looking like a girl? Or those stereotyping psuedo-homophobic comments about him being “probably gay”? Well laugh all you want, because Justin Bieber is laughing too; all the way to the bank. He will be fine regardless of what you say or do, but what about you? What does the hatred say about you?
You can go ahead and unfollow me right now if you can’t stomach someone sticking up for a talented 16 year old who is the object of hatred from so many people. When it comes down to it, I will not hate on a child, a 16 year old child, who is living his dream. You can rip apart Britney Spears or Lady Gaga, and I will usually look the other way seeing as they are adults, but a 16 year old? If you were as high and mighty as you are acting, then you would probably rise above ridiculing a kid. For those over 18, you should have better things to do than feel threatened by the presence of a famous minor.
Many preach that they wish their artists were actually talented, and when someone finally comes along that can play 4 instruments, sing, and dance, they toss them aside for petty reasons or conforms to stigmas. Is there no pleasing people? Yet less-talented recent manufactured flukes of the pop machine get off scot-free. Is it his looks? His age? His incredibly annoying fan-base? (Yes it’s true, they are insane).
Many people, when questioned, cannot pinpoint what they don’t like about him, save for “I don’t care for his music” Well to each his own, everyone has different tastes, and that is understandable, but is that enough reason to HATE? Usually people can’t name any one particular thing he has done to deserve so much hate. He never says really stupid/ignorant things in red carpet interviews, he never slams other celebs, and really he’s kind of charismatic as even some of his haters will admit. Some of the only times he has said anything “wrong” is when he was purposely misquoted, ie: that Rolling Stone article (who later retracted)
The fact of the matter is that he is doing pretty well at handling the immense stress and pressures (which most of his haters can’t even begin to fathom) of the entertainment industry generally well for a 16 year old. So maybe if you want to hate you should direct your hate at his record label, his producers, his managers, or any adults in charge of making real decisions for him, and just give this adolescent some leeway. Most likely when you were younger, your every move wasn’t broadcast for the world to judge, and there weren’t grown adults hoping that you fail.

I can’t remember what any of the singles from the last four Britney Spears albums sounds like. Early singles like “…Baby One More Time,” “Oops! I Did It Again,” and even “Not A Girl (Not Yet A Woman)” were catchy and memorable. None of her more recent material has stuck with me in the same way. What’s most striking about her discography, for me, is the awfulness of the cover art. Since the cover for her new album, Femme Fatale, has been released today, I think a review is in order.
Rapper Vanilla Ice was hospitalized earlier this week after he was knocked unconscious in an ice skating accident.
Vanilla Ice — real name Robert Van Winkle — is rehearsing for U.K. reality TV show “Dancing on Ice,” but suffered a fall on Tuesday.
The star hit his head during a routine with his professional partner, Katie Stainsby, and passed out.
He regained consciousness after a few minutes and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Medics requested the star remain under observation overnight, but he refused, according to Britain’s The Sun.
He tells the publication, “Katie scraped me off the ice — I had no idea what happened at first. I was out for a few minutes. There was blood everywhere. I feel like I got hit by a train.”
How profesh of MSN to not note the comical irony that Vanilla Ice slipped on ICE. Maybe it was too obvious?
